Man-made climate change is happening and it is spiraling out of control at a frightening rate. Unfortunately, fossil fuel companies and governments are not acting in a way that is commensurate with the tragedy that is unfolding before us. We can no longer wait for governments to make sensible decisions around climate change as we are fast running out of time. We must now turn to the companies themselves.
Fossil Free Melbourne University forms part of a global movement called ‘Go Fossil Free’.Go Fossil Free is an international network of individuals and organisations campaigning for institutions to move their money out of fossil fuels and into the low carbon economy, with the aim of both undermining fossil fuel companies financially, and removing their social license to continue to recklessly pollute our atmosphere.
Since the 2012 campaign launch in US, 16 local governments (including San Francisco and Seattle), 11 religious institutions (including the NSW and ACT’s Uniting Church), 6 universities and 3 foundations have committed to divest.
The Fossil Free MU team believe that if we can convince the University of Melbourne to take its investments out of fossil fuels and brand themselves “Fossil Free”, this will send a powerful message to the community and big business that fossil fuels need to go.
Join us to be part of the transition away from fossil fuels to a renewable energy future!
